Black fuzzy mold in closet: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, fuzzy spots spreading on the back wall of our walk-in wardrobe in Jumeirah. The musty smell hits you as soon as you open the door, and it's definitely gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be calling a professional cleaning company or is this something I can handle myself with products from Ace Hardware?

The fuzzy black spots and strong musty odor indicate active mold growth, almost certainly due to high humidity and condensation. Given its location on a wall and the persistent smell, this is likely more than surface-level and requires a professional approach.

In Dubai's climate, simply wiping it away with a store-bought cleaner will not address the root cause—moisture trapped within the wall structure. For a recurring problem of this scale, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source (like a hidden pipe leak or condensation from an AC duct) and assess the extent of the growth inside the wall cavity.

If the affected area is smaller than one square meter and confined to the surface, you can attempt careful DIY cleaning with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Never use bleach, as it doesn't kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality. However, the musty odor is a key indicator that spores have permeated the area, and DIY methods often fail to prevent rapid regrowth.

A reputable remediation company will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the water source, contain the area to prevent spore spread, safely remove contaminated materials, and employ HEPA filtration to clean the air. The goal is to fix the moisture problem and remove the mold, not just disinfect the surface. Always request a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the space is truly clean and safe.
