Black fuzzy spots in closet: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s gotten way worse since last month's humidity. What’s the safest and fastest way to get rid of this ourselves, or should I call a professional company right away?

The rapid spread you're describing, especially after a period of high humidity, indicates an active moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is commonly condensation from an AC supply line running inside the wall or a small leak from adjacent plumbing.
For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach may be possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, scrub the area, and allow it to dry completely. Ensure the room is well-ventilated. However, if the mould has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the wooden backing of the closet, or if it returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source is still present. Given the location—a closet with stored fabrics—and the description of it "spreading," a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will use a moisture meter to pinpoint the water source behind the wall, which is critical for a permanent solution. Spores can also spread to your clothing. Remediation involves containing the area, removing affected materials safely, and addressing the root cause to prevent immediate recurrence. A company with its own microbiology lab can test a swab to confirm the mould type, which guides the remediation protocol. |
