Black grout and musty smell in UAE bathroom: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black over the last couple of weeks, and no matter how much I scrub, the musty smell just won't go away. With this humidity, it seems to be spreading a little every day. Is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately, or are there any DIY solutions that actually work here in the UAE?

That black grout and persistent musty smell are classic signs of active mould growth, and Dubai's high humidity provides the perfect environment for it to thrive. Scrubbing surface mould often fails because the roots penetrate deep into the porous grout and the moisture source behind the tiles remains unaddressed.

For a small, isolated patch, a DIY attempt with a dedicated mould-killing cleaner (not just bleach) can be a first step. However, the rapid spread and strong odour you describe suggest a more serious issue, likely from condensation within the wall or a hidden leak from plumbing. In these cases, professional assessment is strongly recommended.

A proper remediation involves identifying and stopping the moisture source first, then removing the contaminated grout entirely. The area is isolated to prevent spores from spreading during the work. Simply painting over it with sealant will trap the mould inside, allowing it to continue growing unseen.

Given the climate and potential for hidden damage, a professional inspection can determine the true extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls. For health and to prevent structural damage to your property, this is often the most effective course of action.
