Black grout and smell: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom has been getting these black, speckly patches over the last couple of months. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just fades for a few days and comes back darker, and the damp, earthy smell is starting to linger in the towels. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or is it time to call in a professional?

The black speckles in your grout are almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation from showers. Bleach only bleaches the surface pigment and doesn't kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns stronger.

For a small area, you can attempt a targeted DIY approach. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, and follow the dwell time on the label. Scrub with a stiff brush, then rinse thoroughly. The key is addressing the moisture source; run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet tiles to reduce condensation.

If the musty smell lingers in towels, it indicates the mold has likely spread into the wall cavity behind the tiles, which is beyond a surface clean. Persistent regrowth after proper cleaning, a spreading patch larger than a square foot, or any smell are clear signs you need a professional assessment. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind the walls. In many Dubai villas, a chronic bathroom mold issue can be linked to a leaking shower drain seal or pipe, which requires repair to truly solve the problem. A professional remediation team, especially one with its own microbiology lab for accurate identification, can diagnose the root cause and ensure it's properly resolved.
