Black grout in bathroom: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in Jumeirah has been turning black for a couple of months now, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it comes right back. I’m worried it’s spreading behind the walls, especially with all the humidity we’ve had lately. Is this a job I can handle myself with a good cleaner from ACE, or should I just call a professional company for a proper assessment and treatment, and what’s a reasonable cost in Dubai for that?

Black grout in a Dubai bathroom is almost certainly mold, thriving on the constant humidity from showers and condensation. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.
For a small, surface-level patch, a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store can be a temporary fix. However, if it's recurring across a large area or has been present for months, the mold has likely infiltrated deep into the grout and possibly the substrate behind the tiles. Given Jumeirah's high humidity, the risk of hidden growth within the wall cavity is a legitimate concern that scrubbing cannot address. A professional assessment is recommended in this case. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check for water damage and mold behind walls without destructive testing. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing compromised grout, treating the subsurface with antimicrobial solutions, and regrouting with mold-inhibiting products. For a standard master bathroom, the cost for a proper assessment and treatment in Dubai is typically in the mid-range for specialized home services; always request a detailed site-specific quote. The key is to solve the moisture source—ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functional and runs for at least 30 minutes after showering. |
