Black grout in humid bathroom: DIY or professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black over the last couple of weeks, and I’m worried it’s mold. It’s spreading quickly and has a really damp, earthy smell, especially after my teenage daughters take their long showers. Given how humid it gets in there, is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from the supermarket?

That black discoloration and damp smell are classic signs of active mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and condensation from hot showers.

For a small, isolated patch, a DIY approach can be attempted. Use a dedicated grout cleaner containing hydrogen peroxide or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. However, if the discoloration is widespread, has penetrated deeply, or returns quickly after cleaning, the mold has likely spread behind the tiles or into the wall substrate. This is beyond the reach of surface cleaners and requires professional assessment.

Given the rapid spread and strong musty odor you describe, this indicates a significant moisture issue and an established colony. In such cases, especially in a frequently used family bathroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the source of moisture (often inadequate ventilation or a hidden leak) and determine the extent of the infestation. Remediation involves containing the area, removing affected materials, and applying antimicrobial treatments to prevent regrowth.

To prevent recurrence, run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers and consider a dehumidifier. Ensure the fan is actually venting outside and not just recirculating air, as is sometimes the case. Improving ventilation is the most effective long-term solution for Dubai's climate.
