Black grout spots in bathroom: DIY or professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has been getting these black spots for the last couple of months, and it’s spreading to the ceiling. I’ve tried spraying bleach cleaner, but it just comes back within a week. I’m worried it’s behind the walls. Is this something I can handle myself with a good scrub, or should I just call a professional company for a proper treatment, and roughly how much would that cost for a standard bathroom here?

Bathroom mould in Dubai is almost always a humidity and condensation issue, not a surface-level cleaning problem. The black spots are likely Aspergillus or Cladosporium, common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. Bleach only removes surface colour; it doesn't kill the root structure penetrating porous grout and can push it deeper.
For a small, contained patch, a proper DIY approach can work. Use a dedicated mould remover (not just bleach) containing quaternary ammonium compounds, scrub with a stiff brush, and thoroughly dry the area with a fan. However, since it's spreading to the ceiling and returning quickly, this strongly indicates a persistent moisture source, likely within the wall cavity or ceiling void from a potential condensation drip or minor plumbing leak. This is very common in JVC apartments. A professional inspection is recommended in this case. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls without damage, identifying the core moisture issue that must be fixed first. Treatment then involves antimicrobial application to the affected areas and the air cavity behind them to prevent regrowth. For a standard bathroom, the cost for inspection and targeted remediation is typically a moderate investment, far more effective than repeated DIY attempts. Always request a post-remediation verification check to confirm the mould and moisture levels have been resolved. |
