Black grout spreading in bathroom: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's master bathroom has started turning black, and it's spreading up the wall behind the toilet. It's been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just comes back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Black grout spreading up the wall in a humid bathroom is almost certainly active mold growth, and bleach is not a permanent solution. It only removes surface discoloration but does not kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout. The high humidity in Dubai provides the constant moisture this mold needs to thrive and return.
For a small, contained area, a DIY approach using a dedicated fungicidal cleaner (not just bleach) applied according to the label instructions can be attempted. However, the fact it is spreading behind the toilet suggests a more significant issue. This area is prone to condensation from the cold water tank and pipework, creating a hidden, persistent moisture source that no surface cleaning can address. The mold growth behind fixtures often indicates it has penetrated the wall substrate itself. In this case, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The remediation process involves identifying and eliminating the moisture source, which may require a dehumidification strategy. The affected grout must be completely removed and replaced, as the fungal structures are embedded within it. For spreading growth, the wall cavity behind the tiles may also need inspection and treatment to ensure the mold is fully eradicated. A reputable company will provide documented before-and-after testing to verify the space has been returned to a healthy baseline. |
