Black mold above AC vent: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. It’s right above the AC vent and the room has felt unusually humid lately. What’s the most effective way to clean this ourselves, or is this a sign of a bigger problem with the AC unit that needs a professional?

That black patch is a classic sign of condensation from your AC unit, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. The cold air from the vent is hitting the warm ceiling, creating moisture that allows mould to grow. The humidity you feel confirms this.

For a small patch, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover, then dry it thoroughly. However, this only addresses the symptom. The mould will almost certainly return unless you fix the condensation problem.

This is likely a sign of a bigger issue with the AC unit itself. The most common causes are low refrigerant levels, a dirty filter, or an undersized unit struggling to keep up, all of which make the coil too cold and cause excessive condensation. A professional inspection of the AC system is needed to diagnose and correct the root cause. They can measure the output temperature and humidity to identify the fault.

Persistent mould growth inside AC units, especially when visible at vents, often requires professional remediation to prevent spores from circulating throughout your home. In many cases, a deep cleaning of the evaporator coil and drain pan by a certified technician is the only permanent solution.
