Black mold above AC vent: DIY or call pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s right above the AC vent and the room has felt really humid lately. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

The black spots spreading above your AC vent are a classic sign of condensation-related mould growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use. The cold air from the vent is hitting the warmer ceiling, creating a damp surface that mould spores thrive on.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent or a specific mould-cleaning solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can damage the paint without killing the root structure. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried. However, this is a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed.

Given its location directly above the vent and the spread you've described, this is likely more than a surface issue. The problem is probably inside your AC unit or its insulated ductwork, which is continuously seeding the area with moisture and spores. DIY cleaning won't resolve this.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the root cause, which is often a clogged condensate drain line, insufficient insulation around the duct, or low refrigerant causing excessive condensation. They can also test to confirm the mould type, as some species like Aspergillus are more common here and require specific remediation protocols. Reputable providers in Dubai should be able to show you before-and-after testing data from an independent lab to verify the cleanup's effectiveness.
