Black mold above AC vent in Dubai: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s right above the AC vent and the room has started to feel damp even with the AC on. What’s the best way to handle this properly here in Dubai—should I just clean it myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to stop it for good?

That pattern is classic for an AC-related humidity issue in Dubai. The black spots are likely mold growth fueled by condensation from your AC unit, which is common here due to the extreme contrast between our hot outdoor air and cold indoor air.
Cleaning it yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials; it doesn't kill the mold roots inside drywall or address the moisture source. More importantly, disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize spores throughout your bedroom. The correct first step is to identify and stop the moisture source. This is almost certainly coming from your AC system. The unit may be oversized, set too cold, suffering from a clogged drain line, or lacking insulation on the ductwork, causing condensation to form on your ceiling. Simply cleaning the spot will result in it returning. For a recurring issue like this, a professional assessment is advised. They can use a thermal camera to pinpoint the exact condensation point and a moisture meter to assess any water damage inside the wall. The mold itself should be properly contained and removed. In many cases, a small section of affected drywall needs replacement. Ultimately, the only permanent solution is to have an HVAC technician correct the underlying condensation problem with your AC unit. Without that fix, any remediation will be temporary. A reputable indoor environmental professional can diagnose both the mold and the HVAC issue. |
