Black mold above shower: DIY or need professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots growing along the ceiling edge above the shower in our Marina apartment. It’s been super humid lately and the smell is getting really strong, but I'm worried my landlord will just send a handyman to paint over it. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach spray, or do I need to push for a professional to check for a bigger problem?

The black spots you've described above your shower are almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai's Marina area due to the intense, consistent humidity and the constant cycling of air conditioning, which creates significant condensation. Painting over it, as you suspect, is a temporary and ineffective solution that will only trap the moisture and allow the colony to proliferate unseen, often within the ceiling void or behind tiles.
While a bleach-based cleaner may remove the surface discoloration, it is a serious misconception that this solves the problem. Bleach is predominantly water, which can actually feed the root structure (hyphae) deeper in the porous ceiling material. Furthermore, it does not address the underlying moisture source, which could be inadequate bathroom ventilation, a small plumbing leak from the unit above, or condensation accumulation from the AC system. The persistent, strong smell is a key indicator of a significant microbial presence. For a rental property, your approach is critical. Under UAE tenancy law, the landlord is typically responsible for resolving issues that affect the habitability and structural integrity of the property, which includes mold remediation stemming from building-related moisture sources. We strongly advise against DIY attempts, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and exacerbate health risks and contamination. Given the duration and the strong odor, a professional inspection is essential. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source and assess the full extent of the contamination, which is often not visible. This provides you with a definitive, expert report to present to your landlord, ensuring the problem is properly resolved through scientific remediation, not a cosmetic cover-up.
