Black mold above shower: how to clean and improve ventilation« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling edge above the shower in our Marina apartment. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think our bathroom extractor fan might be too weak. What’s the most effective way to clean this and who should I contact to check the ventilation system?

Black mold above a shower is almost always due to excessive humidity and inadequate ventilation, a common issue in Dubai's climate where high humidity and constant AC use create significant condensation.

For immediate cleaning of the surface mold, wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated bathroom mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. For porous surfaces like drywall or ceiling tiles, avoid over-wetting as this can drive mold deeper; a hydrogen peroxide solution can be more effective. This is a temporary fix unless you address the moisture source.

The core issue is your weak extractor fan. In a Marina apartment, bathroom fans should run continuously or for at least 20 minutes after a shower to remove humid air effectively. You should contact a licensed HVAC technician or a specialized ventilation company to assess the fan's extraction rate (measured in CFM - Cubic Feet per Minute). They can determine if it's underpowered for your bathroom's size and install a more powerful unit if necessary. Proper ventilation is the only permanent solution to prevent rapid regrowth.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or if you experience unexplained allergies, a professional mold inspection is recommended to check for hidden moisture within the ceiling void or walls. In the UAE, remediation companies should provide a detailed lab report identifying the mold species and spore count to verify the problem is resolved.
