Black mold and kids' cough: clean ourselves or see doctor?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’ve just noticed a bunch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed this, probably from the humidity last month. What’s the safest way to clean this ourselves to prevent it from coming back, and should I be taking them to a doctor to get checked out?

Black mold exposure can cause nighttime coughing and respiratory irritation, especially in children. You should take them to a pediatrician for an evaluation, as persistent coughs can be linked to mold sensitivity or other environmental factors. A doctor can assess if their symptoms are allergy-related or require further treatment.

For the mold behind the wardrobe, the safest initial step is not to clean it yourself. Disturbing it will release a high concentration of spores into your bedroom air, which your family will breathe in. The priority is to identify the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from an AC unit, a hidden pipe leak, or humidity seeping through an external wall. The mold will return unless this is fixed.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Use a diluted vinegar or detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach doesn't kill the roots and its fumes are harmful. However, given the location and that it's already affecting your children's health, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can conduct air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentrations and use moisture meters to find the hidden water source, which is critical for a permanent solution.
