Black mold around AC vent causing cough: urgent professional cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots that have appeared around the AC vent in our master bedroom. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of months since the weather got more humid. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black mold around AC vents is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. The coughing in your children is a significant indicator that this should be addressed promptly, as certain mold species can irritate the respiratory system.

Cleaning visible spots with bleach yourself is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause or the hidden mold growth inside the ductwork. Disturbing it without proper containment can release more spores into your bedroom air, potentially worsening the cough.

For a situation involving health symptoms and visible growth, a professional inspection is urgent. The goal is to identify the specific species through lab analysis to understand the risk level and locate the moisture source feeding the mold inside the unit or ducts. Reputable providers use containment procedures and specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums to safely remove the biomass and treat the area to prevent rapid regrowth, which is highly likely in our climate if not done correctly.
