Black mold around AC vent: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold around the vent of the AC unit in our master bedroom. The room has felt more humid than usual for the last few weeks, and the air coming out doesn't feel as cold as it should. I’m worried it’s the chiller unit, but I’m not sure if this is something I can clean myself with a spray from the hardware store or if I need to call a professional for a full system clean.

Based on the symptoms you've described – black mold around the vent, increased humidity, and reduced cooling – this is a classic indicator of a contaminated system. The mold you see is likely just the tip of the iceberg; the main colony is almost certainly growing within the chilled water fan coil unit (FCU) itself, on the damp cooling coils and drain pan. This is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels, which cause condensation that the unit's drain line can't always handle efficiently.

Using a store-bought spray on the visible patch is a temporary fix at best and potentially hazardous. It won't address the root cause inside the unit, and disturbing the mold can aerosolize harmful spores throughout your bedroom. For a proper resolution, the FCU needs to be opened, inspected, and professionally cleaned. This involves specialized biocides and techniques to eradicate the growth at its source and sanitize the entire air path.

Given the potential health risks and system damage, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We can perform a thorough assessment, including air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination and provide a certified hygienization report.
