Black mold around AC vent: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell and I just found patches of black mold around the vent in my bedroom here in Jumeirah. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back within a couple of days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company in Dubai?

The damp smell and recurring mold indicate a moisture source the vinegar isn't addressing. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, especially if there's condensation inside the unit or ductwork.
For a small, surface-level patch, a thorough cleaning with a dedicated mold remover can be attempted. However, since it returned quickly, the visible growth is likely just the tip of the iceberg, with more mold present inside the vent or AC system. Disturbing it yourself can aerosolize spores throughout your apartment. Professional remediation is strongly advised here. They will contain the area, safely remove the biofilm inside the ducts, and—most critically—identify and rectify the moisture source, which is often a clogged drain line or insufficient insulation causing condensation. A proper inspection, often involving a camera scope of the ducts, is necessary to assess the full extent. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide culture tests to confirm the mold type and verify its removal post-remediation, which is the only way to be sure the problem is resolved. |
