Black mold behind bed: DIY fix or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids' bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has had this weird damp smell since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I finally moved their bunk beds today and found a patch of black mold spreading along the bottom of the wall behind the furniture. What's the most effective way to get rid of this myself, or should I just call the landlord immediately?

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a DIY approach can be effective if the source of moisture is resolved. First, move all furniture away to allow the wall to dry completely. The damp smell is a classic sign of condensation buildup, common in Dubai's humidity when furniture is placed against an exterior wall cooled by AC.
Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water and apply it to the mold patch. Let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Avoid bleach, as it only removes surface colour and does not address the root cause. After cleaning, dry the area thoroughly with a fan. However, if the mold returns quickly or covers a larger area, the issue is likely inside the wall cavity itself. In villas, this often stems from a small, unseen leak in the plumbing or a breach in the external waterproofing that allows moisture in during humidity spikes. This requires professional diagnosis to find the source. Under UAE tenancy law, structural issues and hidden defects that affect habitability are the landlord's responsibility. You should inform them immediately, as they are obligated to address the moisture source and subsequent remediation. For your own assessment, a professional inspection can identify the exact mold type and moisture penetration points, which is crucial for resolving the problem permanently. |
