Black mold behind bedroom wall: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the bedroom has these black and greenish splotches that we just noticed when moving furniture. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for two years and it's never been an issue, but the humidity this past month has been brutal. I'm really worried it's spread behind the drywall. What's the most effective way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional company right away?

Given the location behind a wardrobe and the recent high humidity, this is likely a moisture issue from condensation or a slow leak. The splotches suggest active growth, and in Dubai's climate, it can penetrate porous materials like drywall quickly.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt DIY. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Mix a solution of one part detergent and ten parts water, scrub the visible mould off the wall surface, and let it dry completely. However, this only addresses surface mould you can see.

The critical concern is what's inside the wall cavity. If the mould has spread behind the drywall, which is common in these scenarios, DIY cleaning is ineffective and can disturb spores into your living space. The wall may need to be opened, the cavity professionally cleaned, and the moisture source identified and rectified.

Given the description and the potential for hidden spread, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall interior without unnecessary damage. In Dubai, remediation should follow DM guidelines, which prioritize containment and proper disposal to prevent cross-contamination. A reputable company will provide a protocol based on a lab analysis to confirm the species and extent.
