Black mold behind bedroom wardrobe: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind the wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation back there caused it. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional cleaning company straight away?

Stop using that room's AC and move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately. The combination of high Dubai humidity and a cold wall from constant AC creates the perfect environment for condensation and mold growth, especially in low-circulation areas.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt a DIY clean. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar solution or a commercial mold cleaner, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. However, if the mold is widespread, has a strong musty odor, or has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the wardrobe backing, DIY will likely only treat the surface.

Given it's a bedroom and the mold is spreading, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact species and the moisture source—which could be a hidden pipe leak or rising damp, not just condensation. In Dubai, remediation should follow international standards like the IICRC S520, which professionals use to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. The goal is to fix the moisture problem and clean effectively, not just wipe away visible spots.
