Black mold behind dresser making us sick? Professional needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I just found a patch of black mold behind our bedroom dresser, which is on an exterior wall. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for years and never had an issue until this last humid season. I’m worried it’s making us sick, but I don’t know if this is something I can clean with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Black mold behind furniture on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially after a humid season. The condensation from your air conditioner meeting the warm exterior wall creates a perfect environment for mold. The coughing your kids are experiencing could certainly be related, as mold spores are a known respiratory irritant.

Do not use bleach. It only removes the surface color and can release more spores into the air. For a small patch, a solution of distilled white vinegar can be more effective for a temporary clean. However, the critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. This is likely a thermal bridging issue where the wall is colder than the room's dew point.

Given the symptoms and the location, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact condensation level within the wall cavity, which a DIY approach cannot do. In many cases, the solution involves improving insulation or ventilation, not just cleaning the visible mold. For health verification, a professional company with its own microbiology lab can take an air sample to identify the specific mold species and spore count in your bedroom, confirming if it's the primary irritant. This data-driven approach is the only way to know the true scope of the problem and ensure the remediation plan addresses the root cause, not just the symptom.
