Black mold behind sofa causing coughs? How to clean and prevent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be related to the black spots I just found along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. We live in a villa in Springs and keep the AC on constantly, but I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped there because the furniture is against the wall. What's the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back, like a dehumidifier or something else?

Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) behind furniture is a common issue in Dubai villas, particularly in high-humidity areas like Springs, and can cause respiratory irritation like coughing in children. The constant AC creates cold walls, and when warm, humid air condenses behind large furniture like sofas, it creates the perfect damp environment for mold growth.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Isolate the area and gently scrub the spot with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can irritate airways. Dry the area completely with a fan.

However, given the symptoms and the fact it's hidden behind a sofa, the visible spot may be part of a larger colony inside the wall. Disturbing it can release more spores. For health concerns with children, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent. They can perform moisture mapping and air testing to identify the source and species.

To prevent recurrence, move the sofa at least two inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. A dehumidifier is highly effective in this situation; maintain indoor humidity levels below 60% to make the environment inhospitable for mold. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and its drain lines are not clogged, as this contributes to indoor humidity. Improving cross-ventilation in the room when outdoor humidity is lower can also help.
