Black mold behind sofa causing kids' cough? Safe removal?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Khalifa City villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from the AC condensation leak we had a while back. Could this be the reason they're so sick, and who can I call for safe removal that won't just spread the spores everywhere?

Yes, the mold behind your sofa is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough. In Dubai's climate, AC condensation leaks are a common source of hidden moisture, and the resulting mold releases spores and mycotoxins into the air that can cause significant respiratory irritation, especially in children.

For a situation this severe, with visible growth and health symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. Safe removal requires containment to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home. Reputable companies will use physical barriers and negative air pressure machines during the process. They should also follow standards for removing contaminated materials and using HEPA vacuums to clean the area thoroughly.

Avoid any service that just sprays a disinfectant and leaves; this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. Look for a provider that offers a full inspection to identify the moisture source and can provide post-remediation verification, often through third-party lab testing, to confirm the space is safe. In the UAE, many quality firms adhere to guidelines like the IICRC S520 standard for mold remediation.

Until help arrives, keep the children out of the room and avoid disturbing the mold yourself, as this will release more spores. The priority is stopping the moisture source, which is likely that AC leak, to prevent it from returning after cleanup.
