Black mold behind sofa: clean myself or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the baseboard behind the sofa in our living room in Jumeirah. It wasn't there before, but I think it might have started after we had that really humid spell a few weeks ago. The room has started to smell a bit damp and earthy. What's the best way to safely clean this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai straight away?

The damp, earthy smell confirms active growth. In Dubai's high humidity, especially after a humid spell, this is common when furniture blocks airflow against an exterior wall, creating a condensation trap.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent. Avoid bleach; it only removes the stain, not the mould, and can damage the baseboard. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan immediately after cleaning. However, the visible patch is often just the fruiting body. The underlying mould network can extend into the drywall or behind it. If it returns after cleaning, the area is larger than a square foot, or the wall feels soft or damp, the issue is beyond surface-level. In these cases, a professional inspection is needed to assess the moisture source and extent of colonization. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls, which is critical for a permanent solution. Given the musty odour has started, indicating possible airborne spores, and the likelihood of hidden growth, calling a Dubai-based company with microbiology lab capabilities is the most reliable course. They can identify the species and provide a protocol to resolve it safely, which is important for families. |
