Black mold behind sofa: DIY fix or need professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room of our villa in Arabian Ranches has these black splotches that seem to be spreading. We noticed it after that really humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago, and now there's a constant damp, earthy smell in the room. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach and a scrub, or is this a sign of a bigger issue that needs professional remediation, and what would that kind of service roughly cost in Dubai?

Black splotches spreading on a wall after a humid period, especially behind furniture, strongly indicate a moisture problem and not just surface mold. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to condensation from AC units or, more seriously, a hidden water leak within the wall from a pipe or a breach in the building envelope.

A DIY bleach scrub is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture issue, guaranteeing the mold will return. More importantly, scrubbing can inadvertently release a large number of spores into your living space, potentially worsening air quality and health effects like the damp smell and respiratory irritation you're noticing.

For a recurring or spreading problem like this, a professional inspection is advised. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source of the dampness—whether it's condensation or a leak—which is the critical first step. The remediation process involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment, followed by repairs. The cost for this in Dubai is highly variable and depends entirely on the extent of the damage and the source of the moisture; it is best to request a site assessment for an accurate scope of work and associated costs. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from happening again.
