Black mold behind sofa: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The wall behind our sofa in our Jumeirah apartment has these black speckles that have gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. We keep the AC running, but there's a constant damp smell in that corner. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or should I just call a professional company to deal with it?

Visible mould that returns after cleaning indicates an ongoing moisture source. Given Dubai's high humidity and the location behind a sofa (which traps air and promotes condensation), this is likely a persistent issue.
Vinegar only addresses surface mould, not the roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall or paint. Stronger DIY chemicals like bleach are also ineffective at penetrating and can be hazardous in enclosed spaces. The returning damp smell confirms active growth. In many Dubai apartments, this pattern suggests a combination of condensation from the AC's cold wall interaction and the city's ambient humidity, creating a perpetual damp environment the mould thrives in. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source—it could be a minor gap in the building envelope, internal condensation, or a hidden leak. They can also perform surface and air sampling to identify the mould species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. For porous materials like drywall, removal and replacement is often the only permanent solution, followed by addressing the humidity source. Look for providers who can diagnose the root cause with moisture meters and provide a scope of work with post-remediation verification, not just a surface clean. |
