Black mold behind sofa - DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s an interior wall, and with the humidity lately, the room just feels damp all the time. What's the best way to deal with this myself, or should I immediately call the building management?

That pattern behind your sofa is likely a moisture issue, not just a simple stain. In Dubai's climate, interior walls can develop condensation from the temperature differential between a cold room and the humid outdoor air, especially with poor airflow. Furniture placed against the wall traps that dampness, creating a perfect environment for mold.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, scrub the area, and let it dry completely. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push the roots deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. The critical step is to identify and stop the moisture source. Move the sofa away from the wall and use a dehumidifier or your AC's dry mode to significantly reduce the room's humidity. A fan will also improve air circulation. However, if the area is larger than a square meter, the mold returns after cleaning, or you notice a musty smell, it's time to call your building management. Under Dubai's regulations, they are responsible for the building's structural integrity and investigating potential leaks within the walls from plumbing or AC drain lines. A professional inspection is recommended in these cases to assess the extent of the issue behind the surface. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source, which is often necessary for a permanent solution. |
