Black mold behind toilet causing my son's cough?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our apartment in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold behind the toilet where it meets the wall. My youngest son has been having a persistent cough and runny nose for the past month, and I'm starting to panic that it's connected. The bathroom doesn't have a window and the extractor fan is pretty weak.
Could this mold be the reason for his allergies, and is this something I should report to my landlord immediately or try to clean myself first?

Black mold in a bathroom, especially in Dubai's high humidity, is a known trigger for respiratory issues like coughing and runny noses. The lack of ventilation and constant moisture from showers creates an ideal environment for it to thrive. It is very possible the mold is exacerbating or causing your son's symptoms.
You should report this to your landlord immediately. Per Dubai rental regulations (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are obligated to maintain the property in a habitable condition, which includes addressing structural dampness and mold issues that affect health. Do not attempt a large cleanup yourself, as improper removal can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. For a patch this size, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent, as mold behind a toilet often indicates hidden moisture within the wall. They can identify the species and provide a proper remediation plan. In the meantime, improve ventilation by running the extractor fan during and for 30 minutes after showers and wiping down wet surfaces to reduce immediate moisture. |
