Black mold behind wardrobe: call management or cleaner first?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It's the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah, and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely, and should I call our building management first or a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth caused by a combination of factors prevalent in Dubai: high external humidity, a thermal bridge at the external wall, and lack of air circulation behind the wardrobe. The wall is likely cooler than the room's dew point, causing condensation and providing the moisture mold needs to thrive.

Your first call should absolutely be to your building management or owner. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, they are responsible for the building's envelope and structural integrity. The issue could stem from an external crack, faulty waterproofing, or insufficient insulation, which they must address. Merely cleaning the visible mold without fixing the underlying moisture source is a temporary and ineffective solution.

Do not attempt to clean significant black mold growth yourself. Disturbing it can aerosolize toxic spores, leading to severe respiratory issues and cross-contamination. A professional inspection is critical. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source and air quality tests to identify the mold species and spore count, which dictates the correct remediation protocol.

For a proper and permanent resolution, the building management must repair the moisture intrusion, and then a certified remediation company like Saniservice must handle the containment, removal, and hygienization of the affected area. We are experts in UAE-specific challenges and follow strict DM guidelines.
