Black mold behind wardrobe: call management or get inspection?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the bedroom has a bunch of black fuzzy spots we just found when moving furniture. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, and I’m worried it might be why my allergies have been so bad this winter. What’s the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the building management first or get a professional mold inspection myself?

This is a common issue in Dubai, especially on external walls where condensation forms from the constant AC use. The first step is to document everything. Take clear photos and videos of the mold, the wall, and its location relative to windows or external walls.

You should inform building management immediately. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, they are responsible for the building's structural integrity and addressing moisture intrusion from external sources, like a leaking pipe in the wall or faulty external waterproofing. Provide them with your evidence and request an investigation into the moisture source.

Given your allergy symptoms, a professional inspection is also wise. Building management will fix the leak but rarely assess the biological contamination. An independent inspection with air and surface sampling can identify the mold species and its concentration, confirming if it's a contributor to your health issues. This is crucial for determining the required scope of remediation. The humid climate here allows mold to proliferate quickly behind furniture, so proper assessment ensures it is handled correctly and not just wiped away, which often spreads spores.
