Black mold behind wardrobe causing cough: clean myself or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is against an outside wall. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because I moved the furniture to rearrange the room. It’s a patch about the size of a dinner plate and the wall feels slightly damp. Should I try to clean this myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional cleaning company?

Do not clean it yourself with bleach. The dampness suggests an active moisture source, and bleach only removes surface discoloration while leaving the root cause and structure-damaging mould intact. In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly a condensation issue from the air-conditioned room meeting the hot outside wall, creating a perfect environment for mould.

For a patch that size with associated dampness and health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify and address the moisture source first—this is critical. Simply cleaning without fixing the humidity or condensation problem guarantees it will return. The coughing in your children is a significant indicator that airborne spores are present, which DIY cleaning can aggravate by disturbing the colony.

A proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and applying specialized biocides that penetrate porous materials like drywall. The goal is to remove the mould, not just bleach it white. After remediation, a post-test can verify the air quality is safe. For peace of mind, especially with children affected, a professional assessment is the safest course of action.
