Black mold behind wardrobe causing coughs? DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because I finally moved the heavy furniture to clean. It’s been really humid lately and that wall feels cold. What’s the best way to deal with this myself, or should I call my building management first?

Black mold behind furniture on a cold wall is a classic sign of condensation issues, very common in Dubai's humid climate when AC-cooled walls meet warm, stagnant air. The coughing in your children is a legitimate concern, as this type of exposure can cause persistent respiratory irritation.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part bleach to four parts water, scrub the area, and allow it to dry completely. However, this only addresses the surface growth you can see. The underlying moisture problem must be fixed to prevent immediate regrowth, which is highly likely given the condensation. Since you're in a rented apartment, your first call should be to building management. Under typical Dubai rental regulations, the responsibility for structural issues leading to dampness and mold, like inadequate insulation on an external wall or a leaking pipe, falls on the landlord. Report it in writing and request they send a technician to identify and rectify the source of the moisture. Given the health symptoms and the fact the mold was hidden for some time, a professional inspection is strongly advised. DIY cleaning can disturb spores and spread them. An assessment can identify the exact species and the full extent of the growth, which often spreads behind walls. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the concrete, documented evidence of the contamination and the post-remediation verification that building management may require to take action. |
