Black mold behind wardrobe causing coughs, how to treat?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just discovered black spots along the bottom of the wall behind our master bedroom wardrobe. We’re on the 15th floor in a Jumeirah Village Circle villa, and this wall faces the outside. What’s the most effective way to treat this and what can I do to stop it from coming back, especially with our humid summer coming up?

Black spots behind a wardrobe with associated coughing strongly suggests a mold issue, likely due to condensation from the external wall. This is a common problem in JVC villas, where temperature differences between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior walls create a perfect environment for mold growth.

The most effective approach is to first identify the moisture source. A professional inspection with thermal imaging can pinpoint condensation spots and rule out hidden leaks. For treatment, the affected section of drywall likely needs to be cut out and replaced, as mold roots penetrate deeply. Simply wiping the surface is a temporary fix. The area must be properly contained during removal to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home. After remediation, applying an anti-microbial coating to the wall can help inhibit future growth.

To stop it from returning, address the humidity. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining correctly, as a clogged drain pan adds moisture to the air. Improve air circulation behind the wardrobe; even a small gap can make a significant difference. Consider using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the upcoming humid summer months. For health concerns, especially with children, a lab analysis of a swab sample can identify the mold species and confirm it is not one of the more hazardous types, providing peace of mind.
