Black mold behind wardrobe causing coughs: treat myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we never move the heavy furniture. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch, and I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to stop it from coming back, or should we call a professional company here in Dubai?

Black mold behind furniture is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The damp wall suggests a moisture source, likely from condensation or a small leak. For your children's persistent coughs, professional assessment is strongly recommended, as certain species like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") can produce irritants and require proper handling.

You can attempt a temporary measure by mixing one part bleach with four parts water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the visible growth and let the area dry completely. However, this will not address the root moisture problem, and the mold will almost certainly return without fixing the source.

The critical step is identifying why the wall is damp. It could be condensation from the cold AC wall meeting humid air, a plumbing leak inside the wall, or moisture wicking from the floor. Moving the furniture to improve air circulation is essential. For a confirmed, recurring problem like this—especially with health symptoms—a professional inspection is the most reliable path. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source and can perform lab analysis to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol.
