Black mold behind wardrobe causing coughs: urgent professional help?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Black mold behind furniture is a serious health concern, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms like coughing. In Dubai's high humidity, this mold can spread quickly through airborne spores. The urgency for professional assessment is high.

Do not use bleach. It is mostly water and can feed the mold, while its fumes can worsen respiratory irritation. More critically, surface cleaning misses the root cause—likely a hidden moisture issue within the wall itself from condensation or a past leak. Disturbing it yourself risks releasing a large concentration of spores throughout your home.

Professional inspection is necessary to identify the mold species through lab analysis and locate the moisture source. Remediation involves containment to prevent cross-contamination, safe removal of affected materials, and addressing the underlying humidity or water intrusion. For a case involving visible growth and health symptoms, this is not a DIY project.

Request a company that provides a detailed assessment, uses containment procedures, and can verify results with before-and-after environmental testing data. This is the standard for credible remediation in the UAE.
