Black mold behind wardrobe causing kids' constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I’ve just pulled back the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah, and found a huge patch of black mold growing behind it, probably from the humidity. Could this be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and should I get them checked out by a doctor immediately?

Yes, the mold behind your wardrobe is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough and cold-like symptoms. In Dubai's climate, exterior villa walls are prone to condensation from the extreme humidity meeting year-round AC use, creating perfect conditions for mold growth behind furniture. The constant exposure to these spores can cause significant respiratory irritation.

You should schedule a visit with your pediatrician to discuss the symptoms and the mold exposure. For the mold itself, this is a serious case requiring professional assessment. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source (like a condensation leak or insulation issue) and the mold species. Remediation must address the root cause to prevent immediate regrowth, which is common here.

Do not attempt to clean significant black mold yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. Keep the children out of the room and ensure good ventilation. The only lasting solution is to have the area professionally remediated, which includes containment, removal, and fixing the underlying moisture issue to ensure it doesn't return.
