Black mold behind wardrobe causing kids' cough? Clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I'm worried it's because of the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. We've lived here for two years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity these past few weeks. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate professional attention. The combination of visible black mold, a recent spike in Dubai's humidity, and the onset of respiratory symptoms in children strongly suggests a microbial issue that goes beyond a simple surface stain.

The black spots behind the wardrobe are likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species, which thrive in the persistent dampness caused by condensation. This is a common issue in UAE homes due to our climate: year-round AC use creates cold surfaces, and the high ambient humidity leads to condensation, especially behind large furniture blocking walls. These spores are known respiratory irritants and can cause or exacerbate coughing, particularly in children.

Bleach is not a recommended solution. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root hyphae growing within the material. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize these toxic spores, spreading them throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, significantly increasing your family's exposure.

We strongly advise against DIY remediation. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have specific guidelines for addressing indoor environmental contaminants to protect occupant health. A certified professional inspection is crucial. Our specialists use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air sampling to determine the exact species, the extent of the contamination inside the wall cavity, and the root moisture source.

For the health of your family, we recommend a professional assessment and remediation. Our team at Saniservice is certified and follows strict containment and air scrubbing protocols to safely remove the hazard. Please contact us for a thorough inspection.
