Black mold behind wardrobe: clean myself or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been super humid lately, and I think the lack of air circulation back there caused it. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, or should we just call our landlord immediately?

This is a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid periods when condensation builds up on cooler exterior walls. The lack of air circulation behind furniture creates a perfect environment for mold.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move the wardrobe and let the wall dry completely. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar or bleach solution. The key is to address the moisture source; a dehumidifier or improving room ventilation is crucial to prevent immediate regrowth. However, given the location on an exterior wall in JVC, this could indicate a more serious condensation issue or even a hidden leak within the wall cavity. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area, or has a strong musty odor, you should involve your landlord. Under Dubai rental regulations (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are typically responsible for remedying structural issues that cause dampness and mold. Contact them in writing, with photos, to request an inspection and proper remediation, which may involve identifying and fixing insulation or leakage problems. For health safety and to verify the extent, a professional inspection with moisture mapping is often recommended. |
