Black mold behind wardrobe: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately, and I just found a patch of black spots in the corner behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. We keep the AC running constantly but the room still feels a bit damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the walls properly?

Based on your description of the situation in Jumeirah, I strongly advise against cleaning the mold yourself and recommend a professional inspection immediately. The combination of persistent coughing in children, visible black discoloration, and a persistent damp feeling despite constant AC use are significant red flags.

The black spots behind the wardrobe are likely a symptom of a larger moisture issue. In Dubai's climate, this is frequently caused by a combination of high external humidity and condensation forming on cold walls, especially behind large furniture that restricts airflow. This creates a perfect microenvironment for mold growth. Simply wiping the visible surface with bleach is a temporary and ineffective solution. Bleach does not kill mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall and can actually aggravate the problem by releasing a high volume of spores and harmful volatiles into the air, potentially worsening respiratory symptoms. The true moisture source must be identified and corrected to prevent recurrence.

Given the health symptoms present, this is a serious case. Proper inspection requires specialized equipment like borescopes to view inside wall cavities, moisture meters to quantify dampness levels, and thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden condensation points. Air and surface sampling are also often necessary to identify the mold species and concentration to assess the health risk accurately.

For a comprehensive assessment and a remediation plan that addresses the root cause, you need a certified professional.
