Black mold behind wardrobe: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks, and I just found what looks like black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park. We keep the AC on most of the time but the room always feels a bit damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description of black mold behind a wardrobe in a consistently damp-feeling room in Jumeirah Park, my professional recommendation is to call a professional inspection and remediation company immediately. This is not a situation for a DIY bleach cleanup.

The persistent dampness you describe is a classic symptom of high relative humidity and condensation, a common issue in Dubai due to our climate and year-round AC use. The wall behind furniture is a prime location for mold growth because air circulation is restricted, allowing condensation to accumulate unseen. The fact that your children have been coughing for weeks strongly suggests the mold colony has matured and is releasing significant amounts of spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air, which can cause these exact respiratory symptoms.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood. It only removes the surface discoloration (the "stain") but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) growing within the material. Furthermore, improper cleaning can agitate the colony, causing a massive release of spores and cross-contamination throughout your home.

A certified professional will conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the infestation and the source of moisture. Remediation involves containment of the area with negative air pressure, safe removal of contaminated porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the area. For the health of your family, especially children who are more vulnerable, a professional approach is essential.
