Black mold behind wardrobe: contact management or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind my wardrobe in the bedroom of our Marina apartment feels damp and has these black speckles all over it. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. I’m really worried it’s been spreading behind there for a while. What’s the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the building management first, or go straight to a professional mold removal company?

Contact building management first; this is standard protocol in Dubai Marina apartments. The dampness likely stems from a leak in the building's external wall or internal plumbing, which is the owner's responsibility to address. They will send their maintenance team to diagnose and fix the moisture source, which is the critical first step. Without fixing the leak, any mold removal will be temporary.

Once the leak is repaired, then engage a professional mold inspector. The black speckles could be anything from common Cladosporium to more problematic Stachybotrys, and only a lab culture can confirm the type. A proper remediation company will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to remove the mold, not just wipe it, preventing spores from spreading to other rooms.

In Dubai’s climate, this is a common issue. Year-round AC can cause condensation if units are undersized or settings create a big temperature differential with the outside humidity. Mold can grow behind furniture placed against exterior walls, as air circulation is restricted. After remediation, keep the wardrobe slightly away from the wall and ensure the room is well-ventilated to prevent recurrence.
