Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity these past few weeks. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company?

Based on the symptoms you describe and the location of the growth, I strongly advise against using a bleach spray. The coughing in your children is a significant health indicator that should not be ignored. The black spots behind the wardrobe are a classic symptom of a larger problem, not the problem itself. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant air conditioning use, condensation forms on cooler surfaces, like exterior walls hidden behind furniture. This creates a perpetual moisture source that mold thrives on.

Bleach is a superficial solution. It may remove the visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces, but it will not address the root moisture issue or kill the hyphae (root system) of the mold penetrating porous materials like drywall or concrete. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your family's exposure and respiratory symptoms.

A professional inspection is crucial here. We follow strict UAE guidelines for indoor environmental quality. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air/surface sampling to identify the exact species (e.g., the potentially toxic Stachybotrys, or common Cladosporium) and the full extent of the contamination hidden within the wall cavity. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials. Most importantly, we identify and rectify the source of the moisture to prevent recurrence.
