Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried it’s gotten worse since the humidity really kicked in last month. Is this the kind of thing I should just clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the microclimate created by placing furniture against an exterior wall. The black spots spreading behind the wardrobe are a significant indicator of a persistent moisture issue, likely due to condensation from your year-round AC system meeting the warm wall surface.

While a small, isolated patch might be addressed with a DIY approach, your situation—widespread, spreading growth in an older Jumeirah building—warrants a professional inspection. Bleach is not a recommended solution; it is primarily a surface disinfectant that does not address the root moisture problem or effectively kill the mold hyphae (roots) embedded in porous materials like drywall. Improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination.

A certified professional, like our team at Saniservice, will conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify the precise moisture source (e.g., condensation, capillary rising damp, or a hidden leak) and the full extent of contamination. We utilize tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras. Remediation involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial application, and, crucially, resolving the underlying humidity or condensation issue to prevent recurrence, in line with UAE standards for healthy indoor environments.

Given the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to mold spores and the complexity of a proper remediation, I strongly recommend against a DIY clean. For a definitive assessment and a permanent solution, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
