Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it’s gotten worse really quickly. What’s the most effective way to clean this ourselves, or should I call a professional company straight away?

Based on the description of black spots spreading quickly on an exterior wall, this is a strong indicator of a persistent moisture issue, not just surface condensation. The exterior wall location, exacerbated by Dubai's high ambient humidity and continuous AC operation (which creates significant temperature differentials and condensation points), suggests a potential breach in the building envelope or rising damp.

For a case of this severity, a DIY approach is not recommended. Applying bleach or store-bought solutions is a superficial fix that will not address the moisture source. The mold growth behind the wardrobe is likely just the visible segment of a larger colony, potentially growing within the wall cavity itself. Disturbing it without proper containment and HEPA filtration will aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system.

The most effective and safe course of action is a professional inspection. A certified mold inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact moisture source (e.g., leaking pipe, capillary rise, AC drain line issue, or a crack in the building façade). Air and surface sampling will identify the mold species and concentration, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol as per UAE health and safety guidelines.

For a proper assessment and a permanent solution, I strongly recommend you contact a professional company. Saniservice specializes in such diagnostics and follows strict UAE standards for remediation.
