Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's been humid lately and I only noticed it when I moved the furniture to clean. I'm worried about their health but also don't want to call in professionals if it's something I can clean myself with bleach.
Is this a DIY job or do I absolutely need to get a mold remediation company in here?

Black mold behind furniture in Dubai's humid climate is a serious health concern, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms. The primary risk is from inhaling the microscopic spores that become airborne when the mold is disturbed.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach may be sufficient if you and the children can stay out of the room during and after cleaning. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed the mold roots deep in porous materials like drywall. Instead, use a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and dispose of all cleaning materials. However, discovering it behind a wardrobe suggests a hidden moisture issue, likely from condensation against an exterior wall or a small leak. Simply cleaning the visible mold will not address the root cause, and it will almost certainly return. Given the children's existing coughs, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source with thermal imaging and moisture meters—common tools in Dubai for diagnosing condensation problems exacerbated by year-round AC use. They will also contain the area during remediation to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home. For health verification, a lab test can identify the specific mold species, which is the only way to confirm if it is a type known to produce harmful mycotoxins. |
