Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom of our villa in Mirdif. It’s definitely worse after we run the AC. With the humidity coming back, I'm worried it's going to get out of hand. Should I just try to clean it myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional, and what would the cost likely be for a single room?

Based on your description of black spots spreading behind a wardrobe in a Mirdif villa, exacerbated by AC operation, this is a classic case of concealed mold growth driven by Dubai's high humidity and condensation cycles. The location behind furniture is a significant red flag, indicating a persistent microclimate and a potential larger-scale moisture issue within the wall cavity or from AC condensate drain line leakage.

A DIY approach with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. It also poses significant health risks in an enclosed space and fails to address the underlying moisture source, guaranteeing rapid regrowth.

This scenario requires professional intervention. A certified inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping and thermal imaging, to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the contamination, which is almost certainly greater than what is visible. Remediation involves isolating the area with negative air pressure, safely removing contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the structure. Crucially, the team will diagnose and rectify the moisture source, which could be a leaking AC drain pan, inadequate insulation causing condensation, or a minor plumbing leak.

For a single room like a master bedroom, the cost for professional inspection and remediation can typically range from AED 2,500 to AED 5,000+, depending on the extent of the damage and the required repairs. This is a necessary investment to protect your property's structure and your family's health.

Given the conditions you've described, I recommend an immediate professional evaluation. Please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a detailed assessment and quotation.
