Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or professional inspection?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Mirdif is always so humid, and for the past couple of months, we've had black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It got worse after the heavy dew last week. Should I just scrub it off with bleach myself, or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional mold inspection?

The black spots behind your wardrobe in Mirdif are a classic sign of a condensation issue, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the recent heavy dew. This location is a problem because the wardrobe traps stagnant, humid air against the cooler exterior wall, creating the perfect environment for mold.

Scrubbing it with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes the visible colour and can irritate your lungs; it does not kill the root structure of the mold on porous surfaces like drywall. More importantly, this growth is a symptom of excess moisture. Simply cleaning it will guarantee it returns unless the underlying humidity problem is solved.

A professional inspection is strongly advised in this case. The inspector will first identify the mold species to confirm the health risk level. Crucially, they will use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact source of the dampness—whether it's condensation from the temperature differential, a small hidden plumbing leak, or even minor water ingress from the outside. Their final report should provide a clear remediation plan to remove the existing growth safely and, most importantly, specific recommendations to prevent recurrence, such as improving room ventilation, using a dehumidifier, or adding insulation to the cold wall. For a persistent issue like this, a proper diagnosis is the only way to achieve a long-term solution.
