Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY fix or call Dubai pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe. It’s been really humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of airflow back there caused it. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I just call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt a DIY clean. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move the wardrobe to expose the area and improve airflow. Scrub the mould off with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), then dry the area thoroughly with a fan. The key is fixing the moisture source—this is often condensation from exterior walls or lack of air circulation in Dubai's high humidity.
However, mould behind furniture often indicates a larger problem. If the mould covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source, which is critical for a permanent fix. In villas, this can be a leaking pipe within the wall or rising damp. Many local remediation companies offer a free inspection and detailed scope of work. The most credible ones will provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the mould species and confirm its removal, which is a standard we adhere to with our own microbiology lab. For a confirmed, recurring issue in a family home, this professional approach is the most effective long-term solution. |
