Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY fix or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots forming on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall facing the marina. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's starting to spread. What's the most effective way to deal with this myself before it gets worse, or should I call my landlord immediately?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity, particularly during the summer months. The location—behind a wardrobe on an exterior wall—creates a perfect microenvironment. The furniture restricts airflow, and the exterior wall is likely subject to temperature fluctuations from the air conditioning, leading to condensation and providing the moisture mold needs to thrive.

For a minor, new occurrence, you can attempt a careful DIY clean. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Wipe the affected area with a solution of detergent and water. Do not use bleach, as it does not kill mold roots and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely using fans and a dehumidifier. The most critical step is identifying and rectifying the moisture source. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature to reduce condensation and that the room is well-ventilated.

However, given that the mold is on a structural, exterior wall and you suspect it is spreading, a DIY approach is a significant risk. It likely indicates a persistent dampness issue that you cannot resolve superficially. Under UAE tenancy law, the responsibility for structural maintenance and issues affecting the habitability of the property typically falls on the landlord.

I strongly recommend you contact your landlord immediately to report the issue in writing. Concurrently, for a proper assessment, you should seek a professional inspection. Surface cleaning alone is often insufficient; hidden mold within the wall cavity is a common and serious problem in this climate. Our company, Saniservice, provides certified mold inspections and testing to determine the exact species and extent of the infestation, followed by professional remediation protocols to ensure it is removed safely and effectively. For immediate advice or to schedule an inspection, please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
