Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY fix or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is against an exterior wall. It's gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. What's the fastest way to deal with this myself, or should I just call my building management in Dubai immediately?

Based on the location and description, you are almost certainly dealing with a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant air conditioning. The exterior wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the temperature difference between the chilled interior and the hot, humid exterior causes condensation to form, especially when air circulation is blocked by a large piece of furniture like a wardrobe.

For a DIY approach, first move the wardrobe away from the wall to assess the full extent. For small, surface-level growth (less than 1 square meter), you can carefully clean the area with a solution of detergent and water. We strongly advise against using bleach, as it does not kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality. After cleaning, the area must be thoroughly dried. However, this is only a temporary fix. The underlying cause—the condensation and moisture accumulation—will not be resolved, and the mold will almost certainly return.

Given that the problem is on an exterior wall and has worsened with humidity, this indicates a persistent moisture issue. Under Dubai regulations, structural defects and building envelope issues are typically the responsibility of the building management or owner's association. You should report this to them immediately. They are obligated to investigate and address the source of the moisture intrusion, which could be inadequate insulation, a leaking pipe within the wall, or faulty external sealing.

For a definitive solution and to ensure the mold is safely and completely eradicated, a professional inspection is highly recommended. Our certified experts at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment to identify the exact moisture source, perform precise mold testing to determine the spore type and concentration, and execute a full remediation protocol to ensure it does not recur.
